Character.AI has removed several Disney characters from its chatbot platform after receiving a cease-and-desist letter from The Walt Disney Company. The letter, dated September 18, accused Character.AI of unauthorized use and monetization of Disney’s copyrighted characters, such as Princess Elsa and Darth Vader. In response, a spokesperson for Character.AI stated that the company acts swiftly to comply with requests from rights holders and confirmed the removal of the infringing content. The platform offers users the ability to create and interact with AI chatbots, some of which were inspired by Disney characters, likening this to interactive fan fiction.
Founded in 2021, Character.AI has faced scrutiny over its content, particularly regarding the safety of younger users. Recent lawsuits have raised concerns about the potential for harmful interactions with its chatbots. In light of these issues, the company emphasized its commitment to user safety, mentioning investments in Trust and Safety measures, including features specifically designed for minors.

UNESCO Virtual Museum of stolen cultural objects

UNESCO has unveiled the first Virtual Museum of Stolen Cultural Objects, developed in collaboration with DDB Paris, architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, and interactive production company makemepulse. This immersive museum aims to restore visibility to missing artifacts, raise public awareness about cultural property theft, and support global efforts against illicit trafficking. The project features stolen and missing objects from various regions, with contributions from countries including Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Greece.

The museum employs AI technology to create lifelike 3D models of artifacts, highlighting their cultural significance while making them recognizable and harder to resell. Visitors can engage with the museum by sharing their own galleries of objects, fostering community involvement in the recovery of stolen items. The virtual museum is now live and will be promoted through a global campaign starting in mid-November, following its official launch at the Mondiacult 2025 event in Barcelona.
